Choosing Business Licenses and Permits

You have made the decision to start with a home based business, although before opening your doors or making the first sale, you need to ensure that everything and all the proceeds are legal. It means that getting the right business licenses and permits should be efficiently handled. The permits can vary on the basis of the city, country and state, and even according to the type of company you are operating.

License the Business: The municipalities or states require businesses to get a simple license to operate. The license can be obtained in return of a fee. If you want to operate the business from home, you need a separate home profession license. A contractor who has a project in a city which is located outside their home can be required to obtain a special license in that city. Other than that, a state license is also required. It is a standard among the regulated industries like law and medicine.

If you are into the retail business, the state may ask you to obtain a license for sales tax which helps you collect the sales tax on behalf of the state. Some other businesses which require a state license are hairdresser or barber, real estate agent or auto mechanic. In a few instances, a business may require a federal license too. Pharmaceutical companies and broadcasters are some businesses that should be licensed federally.

Certain valuable online resources make researching the licensing process easier. The US Small Business Association offers a list of how the licensing process should start in every state. The World Bank in the website DoingBusiness.org has examined the business processes all over the world and detailed the steps which are required for registering your business with the government. You can obtain the proper permits which is an important part of the task.

The permits regulate the way in which you conduct your business on the local, state and federal levels. This is the case with the highly regulated industries like firearms and interstate trucking. The permits which are required vary depending on the basis of location and sort of business that you carry out. A restaurant will need a license for occupancy, liquor license and a fire certificate among others. Permits for an office business can vary depending on the size of the office and the type of operating that carries on.

There can at the same time be regulations on the number of bathrooms and parking spaces that you have to offer, as well as the extent of access which physically challenged clients or customers require. These aspects will require time and could even have fees attached to them. The licenses and permits also have an international outlook, with the US being one of the friendliest economies for businesses to operate in.

According to DoingBusiness.org, the average US business needs a total of 18 steps for licenses and permits. This requires an average of 69 days and costs 16% of the per capita income. While the figures are not as efficient as is the case in Denmark, which requires 7 procedures for licenses and permits, or Korea where the entire process is over within 52 days. However, the US asks lesser procedures and paperwork out here takes less time than it takes in Iran (668 days on an average).
