Thank to the ambient noise of the University of Southern California college campus and the surrounding urban chores of the tires, the sirens of police and the occasional gunshot, the Douglas Pick needed some sleep. While a student is at USC’S Lloyd Greif Center fort the Entrepreneurial Studies, earplugs delivered the silence that he craved. After leaving a job at the A&M Records in the year 1992, pick out the lessons from their USC days for working on the research earplugs. The nights on the L.A. University campus had changed him to be a strong believer in the benefits of the noise blockers made of tiny foam.
He saw the opportunity in the sector and later in that year was launched DAP World from his apartment in Studio City located in California. Early, Pick woke at about 4a.m for working on sales, marketing and operations. During the afternoon, with the help of friends and family, he joined different types of products on the dining room table. Within five years, Pick’s Hearos earplugs were disturbed in the nation and he needed to expand the operations. The home based manufacturing system that he made was no longer sufficient for meeting the demand, he says. Pick was reluctant to take on the overhead to house and run his manufacturing facility.
But in the year 1997, one of his suppliers suggested that he meet with the New Horizons which is a California based organization that assists and gives employment to the disabled adults. New Horizons facility was equipped to take on DAP World’s manufacturing system and can handle fulfillment and shipping. Of all the working people having any kind of disabilities, 21 per cent say that they are employed compared to 59 per cent of the people who are without any kind of disability. In the year 2009, 19.2 per cent of the people with the disabilities were employed in the year 2009 as compared to 64.5 per cent of the non disabled population.
The DAP World, today based in Aliso Viejo, California sells more than 36 million Hearos and Pretty in Pink earplugs every year to the retailers like for example, Walmart, Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid that generated roughly $5 milion in the total gross income annually. Those numbers are considered as a great support for more than 200 people at the new Horizons. Pick also says the commitment of the people working from him with the help of New Horizon programs.
